Throughout the year your children will be learning different types of Math: number sense, beginning addition and subtraction, algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, statistics and probablity, and mathmatical reasoning. This is a page where you can see there work in progress. What they should know and what they are beginning to learn. In the end, this will be a guide or tool to help you assist your child in their learning experience. Practice problems, pictures, and sometimes videos will be right here! I will never take off past content and you will always know exactly what your child is learning every week of class.
Week 1 - This week your child will be working on number sense with the numbers 1-20. We will be saying these numbers out loud, counting these numbers and asking which number is a number greater , lesser, or equal. We will be playing some games with these numbers.
While working with these numbers, we will be using the symbols less than, greater than, and equal to (<, >, =). Also, remeber that when it comes to the symbols, the character always points to the smallest number.
Examples:
1. 3 < 5
2. 7 > 2
3. 14 < 17
When going over this with your child, remeber to start with easier questions and ramp the level up as you see needed. The children should know the numbers, but they should also know the concepts as well.
Ask your child about the games we play in class: Top-it (Card game War), bunny-hop, penny game.
Try this at home: Top it.
Top it!
Top-it is also know as War to most folks. There is one exception to Top it. You must remove the face cards: kings, queens, jacks, and aces. After you have removed the face cards, you can now play a game of top it. After splitting up your shuffled deck of cards equally, you can begin. Each player places one card over off of the top of their deck, as shown in the picture to the right. The person who has the highest number value wins the other card and then puts it into their winnings pile next to their deck. If you both get the same number then you have a top off! To complete the top off, just flip the next card each and whoever has the largest number gets all the cards that were on the table. Sometimes you get a top off on top of a top off! After going through the decks, shuffle your winnings pile and use this as your new deck. You can either play till someone has all the cards, which takes a real long time, or you could set an amount of rounds and see who has the most cards after those rounds. Let your kids explain the rules, they love to show off what they know!
